Protect Insurance Companies PSA: Hollywood Mocks, Jimmy Responds

psa There is a video making its way around the Internet in which Hollywood actors, including Will Ferrell, mock and ridicule those in opposition to President Obama’s health care reforms.  They take particular aim at private health insurance companies as they advocate a public, tax-dollar-subsidized, health insurance plan.  My wife came across this video and asked for my take on it, so I thought I’d share my opinion with all of you.

Check Your Sources

First of all, be aware of where the news is coming from.  This video is being distributed by MoveOn.org, an organization formed during Bill Clinton’s presidency.  Their organization’s main premise was that the country needed to “move on” and forget about the president having sex in the oval office with a 21 year old intern, that the president’s private behavior in cheating on his wife was not the concern of the American people.  MoveOn.org is also well know for calling General Petraeus General Betray Us in a 2007 full-page ad in the New York Times.  MoveOn.org is an extreme left-wing organization, and the mere fact that they are distributing this video ought to raise red flags.

Premise of Video Completely Wrong

The premise of the video is that private health insurance companies are evil and do not look out for the needs of their customers and only are out to try to make themselves wealthy.  While there are no doubt individuals in insurance companies, and all walks of business life, that are selfish and greedy, the indictment that all insurances are this way is patently false.  Insurance companies provide a service that most Americans find valuable.  And to criminalize private health insurance the way these Hollywood figures do and they way Canada has done, has proven to lead to fewer options, and poorer health care service.  See this story about a Canadian woman who was waiting for two years to have surgery before she finally drove across the border to Montana and got the surgery done in two days.

Most Americans Disagree with Hollywood Elites

The fact of the matter is that 80% Americans are happy with their current health insurance.  In fact, polls show that, in terms of healthcare coverage and in quality of healthcare received, Americans rate their private health insurance as superior to government run Medicare and Medicaid.  In polls throughout the summer, Americans has voiced their opposition to Obama’s reforms and disapproval of the President’s plan now stands at 56%(see Support for Health Care Plan Hits New Low).  As more people have come to understand his plan, more have stood up to oppose it.  Obama’s healthcare plan raises taxes and will reduce quality of care just like socialized medicine has done everywhere it has been tried.

Competition in Health Care

A point of emphasis in this ridiculous video is regarding competition, which everyone seems to agree is healthy and we need more of.  Yet Obama and the Hollywood elites are trying to stamp out competition with increased government intervention and fewer free market forces. It is clear, from Obama’s proposal, and from his past statements on his desire for a “single payer system”, that he many left-leaning Democrats and Socialist want to put private insurers out of business.  (see the video embedded below or Obama’s Hearth Care Deception from the Glenn Beck program.) The public option proposed is designed to eventually eliminate the private insurance business and it will do just that as no private business that has to meet a bottom line in order to survive can compete with a government entity that can run up as much debt as it wants.

Options for Health Care Competition

If Obama, the Democrat/Socialist, and the Hollywood elites want more competition in the health care industry, there are several proposals are out there that they may want to consider.  Why not let people buy health insurance across state lines (which is currently prohibited in the US)?  Why not let people get a tax credit on the cost of health insurance?  These are free market, incentive based solutions that will address the problem without growing the size and power of government.

Who died and made you king?

One other thing the video takes aim at is the profits of health insurance companies.  But my question is, who the heck are these people to say how much companies and individuals can and cannot make?  If you ask me, $40 million for acting in a movie is a bit excessive.  But I believe in freedom and if Hollywood movie companies want to pay Will Ferrell that much, that’s their right.  I have no right to tell these actors how much they can or cannot make, and they have no right to dictate the profit levels of anyone else.

Freedom and Rule of Law

We believe in the rule of law.  If Health insurance companies are committing crimes, then prosecute them and send them to jail.  Otherwise, if they are obeying the law, providing a service in exchange for health coverage, then they ought to be free to run their business as they see fit. If they are really so awful as these Hollywood actors make them out to be, then in a free market economy those companies will lose customers.

It Feels Good but Makes No Sense

It is a feel good position to support “free” healthcare for all.  But unfortunately, “free” healthcare will cost you your freedom, which is a price neither I, nor the majority of Americans, are willing to pay.  It may sound good in theory, but the only way to provide universal health care is to take, by force, from one group in order to give it to another.  America has the greatest health care in the world, and socializing it in the way Obama and these Hollywood actors want, is only sure to make health care worse for everyone.

Obama on Abortion

It took only three days for our new President Obama to begin to do his part to expand the number of abortions performed throughout the world. In an effort to “promote safe and effective voluntary family planning programs in foreign nations”, on Jan 23, 2009 Obama rescinded the Mexico City Policy. This policy prohibited nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) from receiving US federal dollars “to pay for the performance of abortions as a method of family planning, or to motivate or coerce any person to practice abortions.” (see the president’s memorandum titled Mexico City Policy and Assistance for Voluntary Population Planning)

FoxNews says this immoral stance on abortion is “a new foreign policy confrontation is in the making — with the Vatican.” In an article called Obama Administration, Vatican Clash Over Abortion, they say Obama is taking heat from the Roman Catholic Church after he ended the ban on federal funding to international groups that perform or promote abortions. “Among the many good things that he could have done, Barack Obama instead chose the worst,” said Monsignor Elio Sgreccia, a top official with the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life.

Of course, Obama’s move to expand abortion should come as no surprise to any American voter who paid the slightest bit of attention to the recent presidential campaign. As you can see in the video below, when a reporter asked Barack when he thinks a baby begins to have “human rights”, Obama fumbled around and eventually said it was “above my pay grade.” The video contrasts Obama’s response with that of his defeated opponent, John McCain. Without hesitation, when asked when a baby has human rights, McCain said “at the moment of conception.”

I have heard of people, otherwise opposed to abortion, that nevertheless supported Obama saying the President has little say over the issue and that Barack actually wants to reduce the number of abortions, as mentioned in the video. But as we have seen in the first week of the Obama presidency, the President does have a big say on the issue of abortion in the way of executive orders (not to mention Supreme Court appointees). And any so-called desire by Obama to reduce abortion, it seems to me, is merely lip service to his supports of religious faith and a moral conscience. But Obama’s belief and actions are firmly pro-abortion, because, as we know from this second brief video clip below, Obama feels an unplanned pregnancy is a “punishment” women should not have to endure.

2008 Election Results

I wanted to look at the results of our recent presidential election and compare it with other recent ones. Below is a complete chart with data from the past nine presidential elections (1976-2008, my lifetime). Obama’s election certainly was historic in many respects. Here are some statistical highlights:

  • Obama got more votes (popular votes) than any candidate in history.
  • McCain got over 3 million fewer votes than Bush got in 2004. (And it wasn’t as if those 3 million people voted for 3rd party candidates this time as you’ll see in the next point.)
  • 3rd party candidates got only 1.7 million votes, just over 1% of the voting electorate.
  • Total votes cast was over 128 million, up 6 million from 2004.
  • Obama was first Democrat to get more than 50% of the popular vote since Jimmy Carter in 1976, 32 years ago.
  • McCain got the lowest percentage of popular vote for Republicans since Dole in 1996 (of course Dole was also contending with Ross Perot who got 10% of the popular vote).
  • Over 5 million votes, 6.9% of the popular vote, separated Obama from McCain. This was the largest margin of victory for a candidate since Clinton in 1996.
  • Voter turnout, as a percentage of eligible voters, was slightly higher than 2004, and the best it has been in my lifetime, since 1976.

Sorry the chart is kind of small. Click on it to see a larger version.
What Does This Mean?
It means McCain lost the race as much as Obama won it. It means McCain did a lousy job of getting out the vote. McCain clearly didn’t excite the conservative base of the Republican party. You could have seen this coming by the fact that most conservative talk radio hosts (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, etc.) fought hard against McCain during the nomination process. Of course they supported McCain over Obama, as McCain was the lesser of two evils. But this never translated into the party rallying around its candidate. There was some excitement from the conservative base at the nomination of Sarah Palin as vice president, but this was short lived and didn’t give McCain enough momentum to overcome the left’s excitement around Barack Obama.

Four years from now, if the Republicans want to regain the White House, they better put forth a better candidate…a more conservative, younger (I wish age wasn’t a factor but I think it was) candidate who can excite the party base and the nation as a whole.

Like Low Gas Prices? Don’t Count On Them Staying With Obama In Charge

Back during the campaign, National Review Online reported this exchange between CNBC reporter John Harwood and Barack Obama. This took place in June when gas prices were around $4 a gallon.

Barack Obama: “We now know that our demand (for oil) is badly outstripping supply with China and India growing as rapidly as they are.”
John Harwood: “So could the (high) oil prices help us?”
Barack Obama: “I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing.”
Here’s the video of the exchange:

Since the traditional media gave Obama such a pass, many of you may never have seen this story before. But it is clear that Barack Obama has no problems with $4 a gallon gas per se, prices have just happened to go up faster than he would have liked.

Now fast forward five months and gas prices are lower than they have been in years. That’s a good thing, right? Well not if you’re a liberal. The same journalists that were in the tank for Obama are now advocating an increase in the gas tax. And as we’ve seen before, Barack Obama has not qualms with Americans paying over $4 for a gallon of gas.

In an editorial on Nov. 16, 2008 called “Raise the Gas Tax“, the Washington Post says, “Energy independence won’t happen if falling gas prices lead to a resumption of bad habits.” And what are those “bad habits?” Why driving to work, of course, and other “bad habits” like taking a cross-country family vacation, and buying an SUV.

So enjoy the low gas prices while you can and you better start preparing yourself for an Obama imposed tax on the gas that is fueling your “bad habits.”

Media Bias in Presidential Election

The extreme media bias in favor of Barack Obama was no surprise to me or the 70 percent of voters that also said it was obvious that the press wanted Mr. Obama to win the White House. What is a little surprising is that The Washington Post’s ombudsman, Deborah Howell, came out and admitted it and even offered evidence of an “Obama tilt” in her own newspaper. Washington Post Op Eds (Opinion Editorials) heavily favored Obama by a 71% to 29% margin. Obama-related articles dominated the newspaper in a 55% to 45% margin over McCain, and that doesn’t even account for whether or not those article were favorable or not to the candidates.

On that subject, whether or not the ‘objective’ news articles were positive or negative to the candidates, I turn to Glenn Beck. You can watch/listen to his series on Youtube; just search for Glenn Beck Battle of the News Headlines. What Glenn found, and again this is no surprise to most of us, was that most of the news articles were positive for Obama and negative for McCain.

The news coverage during this election cycle was so heavily slanted in favor of Obama that even the left-leaning Saturday Night Live had to make fun of it, as seen in the video clip below.

Obama’s Campaign Promises

Per guidance from my wife, I’m going to try really hard not to be sarcastic here. But I really do want to commit to the public record the promises Barack Obama made during his historic run to the White House. I do this for several reasons: 1) so that I can know what to expect for myself and my country with the election of Obama, and 2) so that I can have something to refer back to four years from now when Obama runs for re-election.

I scoured Barack Obama’s Web site this morning. I thought I should hurry and do this before he takes down his Web site and tries to erase from our memory all the promises he has made. What I found I divided into two categories: 1) promises to individuals and families, and 2) promises to and for the nation overall. Directly below, I summarize his promises in some quick bullet points; further below is more detailed quotes pulled directly from Barack Obama’s Web site this morning.

Promises to Individuals and Families:

  • $1,000 per working family from a new “Making Work Pay” tax credit
  • $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families
  • Simplify tax filings so Americans will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes
  • A $500 Universal Mortgage Credit
  • Expand the Family and Medical Leave Act to allow parents up to 24 hours to participate in their children’s academic activities
  • Guaranteed health coverage for every American
  • Lower the cost of health care for the average American family by $2,500
  • Raise the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour
  • Completely eliminate taxes for seniors making under $50,000 per year
  • Provide home visits by trained registered nurses to low-income expectant mothers
  • Guaranteed seven paid sick days per year for low-wage workers
  • A new American Opportunity Tax Credit worth $4,000 in exchange for community service, making community college tuition completely free for most students
  • Protect Social Security, provide cheaper prescription drugs, and strengthen Medicare
  • Reduce homelessness among veterans

Promises to the Nation Overall:

  • Save more than 1 million jobs through a $25 billion State Growth Fund
  • Create 5 million new “Green” jobs
  • Create a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank that will create two million new jobs and stimulate $35 billion per year in new economic activity
  • Cut both taxes and government spending
  • Lower the federal deficit by reducing wasteful spending
  • Increase the supply of affordable housing
  • Reduce crime recidivism (i.e. repeat offenders)
  • Establish 20 Promise Neighborhoods which will provide early childhood education, violence prevention and after-school activities to entire neighborhoods from birth to college
  • Put 1 million plug-in hybrid cars on the road that can get 150 miles per gallon
  • Defeat terrorism worldwide
  • Secure our borders
  • Increase stability in Iraq and the Middle East
  • Support small business development
  • Put broadband Internet in every community in America

Now even Barack’s supporters must admit, this is a pretty tall order. But hey, I’m looking forward to it. I mean, we’re talking at least an additional $5,000 a year for me and my family due to his various tax credits and rebates. Government spending is going to be reduced. Terrorism will be defeated worldwide. Our borders will be secured. This is a conservative’s dream.

Okay, you can see that sacarism is starting to seep in. I just couldn’t resist. Below is the detail on each of our President Elect’s promises. It’s pretty lengthy, but again, I’m just putting it here for the record.

Barack Obama will provide a tax cut for working families: Obama and Biden will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 95 percent of working Americans the tax relief they need. They will create a new “Making Work Pay” tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family.

Provide tax relief for small businesses and startups: Obama and Biden will eliminate all capital gains taxes on startup and small businesses to encourage innovation and job creation.

Fight for fair trade: Obama and Biden will fight for a trade policy that opens up foreign markets to support good American jobs. They will use trade agreements to spread good labor and environmental standards around the world.

Jumpstart the Economy: Enact a Windfall Profits Tax to Provide a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will enact a windfall profits tax on excessive oil company profits to give American families an immediate $1,000 emergency energy rebate to help families pay rising bills. This relief would be a down payment on the Obama-Biden long-term plan to provide middle-class families with at least $1,000 per year in permanent tax relief.

Provide $50 billion to Jumpstart the Economy and Prevent 1 Million Americans from Losing Their Jobs: This relief would include a $25 billion State Growth Fund to prevent state and local cuts in health, education, housing, and heating assistance or counterproductive increases in property taxes, tolls or fees. The Obama-Biden relief plan will also include $25 billion in a Jobs and Growth Fund to prevent cutbacks in road and bridge maintenance and fund school repair – all to save more than 1 million jobs in danger of being cut.

Simplify Tax Filings for Middle Class Americans: Obama and Biden will dramatically simplify tax filings so that millions of Americans will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes. Obama and Biden will ensure that the IRS uses the information it already gets from banks and employers to give taxpayers the option of pre-filled tax forms to verify, sign and return. Experts estimate that the Obama-Biden proposal will save Americans up to 200 million total hours of work and aggravation and up to $2 billion in tax preparer fees.

Invest In A Clean Energy Economy And Create 5 Million New Green Jobs: Obama and Biden will invest $150 billion over 10 years to advance the next generation of biofuels and fuel infrastructure, accelerate the commercialization of plug-in hybrids, promote development of commercial scale renewable energy, invest in low emissions coal plants, and begin transition to a new digital electricity grid. The plan will also invest in America’s highly-skilled manufacturing workforce and manufacturing centers to ensure that American workers have the skills and tools they need to pioneer the first wave of green technologies that will be in high demand throughout the world.

Create a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will address the infrastructure challenge by creating a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank to expand and enhance, not supplant, existing federal transportation investments. This independent entity will be directed to invest in our nation’s most challenging transportation infrastructure needs. The Bank will receive an infusion of federal money, $60 billion over 10 years, to provide financing to transportation infrastructure projects across the nation. These projects will create up to two million new direct and indirect jobs and stimulate approximately $35 billion per year in new economic activity.

Create a Universal Mortgage Credit: Obama and Biden will create a 10 percent universal mortgage credit to provide homeowners who do not itemize tax relief. This credit will provide an average of $500 to 10 million homeowners, the majority of whom earn less than $50,000 per year.

Expand the Family and Medical Leave Act: The FMLA covers only certain employees of employers with 50 or more employees. Obama and Biden will expand it to cover businesses with 25 or more employees. They will expand the FMLA to cover more purposes as well, including allowing workers to take leave for elder care needs; allowing parents up to 24 hours of leave each year to participate in their children’s academic activities; and expanding FMLA to cover leave for employees to address domestic violence.

Obama Attacks McCain Economic Plan as Selfish, But Who’s Really the Self One?

In a speech yesterday in Florida, Barack Obama defend himself against attacks from John McCain in which Obama is labeled a socialist. In fact, Barack attempts to turn the tables on McCain’s ecomonic plan by calling it “selfish.” Obama says, “I don’t know when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness.” (from TampaBay.com)

Calling conservative economic principles, as far as John McCain is conservative, selfish is an insult and could not be further from the truth.

Which approach is more selfish?

  • John McCain wants to extend the Bush tax cuts and let the American people keep more of their hard-earned money.
  • Barack Obama was to end the Bush tax cuts, and raise taxes on top of that, taking away more of people’s hard-earned money.

Which approach is more selfish?

  • John McCain wants to balance the federal budget, reduce our national debt and require the government to spend only what it takes in.
  • Barack Obama proposes billions in new spending that will cause deficits and drive up our national debt, passing a tremendous burden on to future generations.

That fact is that Barack Obama is a socialist. He wants to raise taxes and spread the wealth with an all-powerful federal government. But while some democrats would trust Obama to take care of all American’s wants and needs, Obama is too selfish to even take care of his own family.

Obama’s selfishness can also be seen in his charitable giving:

Like most liberals and socialists, Obama is only generous with other peoples money. With Barack Obama, it’s do as I say, not as I do. Now you tell me, who’s the selfish one?

Obama Talks About “Fundamental Flaws” of the US Constitution

This is no surprise to anyone who has studied Obama’s record, but there have been two audio clips revealed recently that show Barack Obama’s disdain for the US Constitution. Yet it still amazes me that this candidate for President makes such a blatant attack on our God-inspired Constitution.

Here’s the audio (about 30 seconds):

Here’s the transcript: “the Constitution reflected a enormous blind spot in this culture that carries on until this day and uh that the framers uh had that same blind spot. I don’t think the two views are contradictory to say that it was a remarkable political document uh that paved the way for where we are now and to say that uh it also uh reflected the fundamental flaw of this country that continues to this day.”

And here’s another, more lengthy (about 4 minutes), clip from a 2001 Chicago Public Radio interview with Barack Obama on WBEZ FM. As you listen (or read the transcript) notice how it is not a discussion about whether or not redistribution of wealth (“spreading the wealth around” as Obama calls it) is right or wrong, constitutional or unconstitutional. It is a discussion about the best way to do it.

Here’s the audio:

Here’s the transcript: “But the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth uh and sort of more basic issues of political and uh economic justice in this society. And uh As radical as I think people tried to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed uh by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it has been interpreted and Warren Court interpreted it in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. It says what the states can’t do to you. It says what the federal government can’t do to you, but it doesn’t say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf. Uh and that hasn’t shifted, and one of the tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court-focused, uh, I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive uh change. And, uh, in some ways we still suffer from that.”

Continuing, he states that “Although you can craft theoretical justifications for it (redistribution of wealth) legally…any three of us sitting here could come up with a rationale for bringing economic change through the courts.”

Sounds like this man is willing to do whatever it takes, through legislative action or through the courts, to bring about his world view…taking from the rich and giving to the poor. But Obama is no Robin Hood, as Jonathan Morris points out on FoxNews.com. “Robin Hood is a legitimate hero, not because he robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, but rather because he returned to the poor what lawfully belonged to them.” Obama wants to take what lawfully belongs to one person and give it to another. This “spreading the wealth around” that Obama seeks is nothing more than legalized theft and an affront to the Constitution.

After what he has said about the Constitution, how can Obama honestly take the oath of office which says, “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and I will to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Socialism Fails Every Time, We Don’t Need to Try It Again

If you have paid any attention to presidential politics in the last week, you probably heard about the discussion between Sen. Barack Obama and a plumber named Joe Wurzelbacher from Toledo, Ohio.

Joe the plumber’s question was pretty straight forward, “I’m getting ready to buy a company that makes 250 to 280 thousand dollars a year. Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?” Obama gave a long, drawn out answer about the supposed virtues of taking from the haves and giving to the have-nots. Then the Democrat nominee finished with this statement, “I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.” from ABC News Senior National Correspondent Jake Tapper

This exchange shows Obama’s love for socialism and his contempt for hard-working Americans. Apparently, despite the fact that socialism has failed every time it has been tried, Obama and the rest of the American left wants to try it again. Like Mitt Romney said at his Republican convention speech “We need change all right: change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington. We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington: Throw out the big-government liberals and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin.”

What’s amazing is that the failures of big-government socialism have been known for at least 100 years. In the early part of the 20th century, Ludwig von Mises, an Austrian Economist, wrote this about socialism:

“The second main objection raised against socialism is that it is a less efficient mode of production than is capitalism and that it will impair the productivity of labour. Consequently, in a socialist commonwealth the standard of living of the masses will be low when compared with conditions prevailing under capitalism…The only certain fact about Russian affairs under the Soviet regime with regard to which all people agree is: that the standard of living of the Russian masses is much lower than that of the masses in the country which is universally considered as the paragon of capitalism, the United States of America. If we were to regard the Soviet regime as an experiment, we would have to say that the experiment has clearly demonstrated the superiority of capitalism and the inferiority of socialism.” Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis, by Ludwig von Mises 1

And I found this quote I love about the dangers of socialism on my friend Greg McMurdie’s blog:

“We are chasing an illusion of equality . . . instead of freedom under States Rights and local self-government. Many have been deluded into a fuzzy morality which holds that equality and equal rights are the same thing. Forced equality contradicts the dream to excel; smothers individuality; restricts rights; removes freedoms; legislates mediocrity; waters down courage, thrift, self-reliance and initiative; and nurtures tyranny. An all-powerful federal government is a mass denial of freedom.” Tom Anderson, Church News. 2 September 1961.

I hope American will learn the lessons from the past failures of socialism and reject Barack Obama before he and his extreme liberal policies further destroy America.

1. From Wikipedia: Ludwig Heinrich Edler von Mises (September 29, 1881 – October 10, 1973) was an Austrian Economist, philosopher, and a major influence on the modern libertarian and conservative movements. Because of his Jewish origin and his political opinions, he left Austria in 1934 and emigrated to Switzerland and eventually settled in the USA where he was a professor at New York University from 1945 until he retired in 1969.

  • NationalJournal.com, Key Votes Used To Calculate The Ratings

Obama consistently voted for higher taxes and more government encroachment into our lives. He voted to give benefits to illegal aliens and to make it more difficult to enforce immigration laws. And unborn child is apparently not an unborn child to Obama. His national defense record is abysmal, voting to give money to the UN and World Bank while cutting off funds to our own troops. And its astonishing the amount of key legistlation on which he did not even vote. He can’t even make up his mind, yes or no, on college financial aid or on funding abortion groups. Someone too weak to take a stand on key issues is sure to weaken our country. Obama’s voting record clearly shows us the direction he will take this country and it is not a good one.
