2008 Election Results

I wanted to look at the results of our recent presidential election and compare it with other recent ones. Below is a complete chart with data from the past nine presidential elections (1976-2008, my lifetime). Obama’s election certainly was historic in many respects. Here are some statistical highlights:

  • Obama got more votes (popular votes) than any candidate in history.
  • McCain got over 3 million fewer votes than Bush got in 2004. (And it wasn’t as if those 3 million people voted for 3rd party candidates this time as you’ll see in the next point.)
  • 3rd party candidates got only 1.7 million votes, just over 1% of the voting electorate.
  • Total votes cast was over 128 million, up 6 million from 2004.
  • Obama was first Democrat to get more than 50% of the popular vote since Jimmy Carter in 1976, 32 years ago.
  • McCain got the lowest percentage of popular vote for Republicans since Dole in 1996 (of course Dole was also contending with Ross Perot who got 10% of the popular vote).
  • Over 5 million votes, 6.9% of the popular vote, separated Obama from McCain. This was the largest margin of victory for a candidate since Clinton in 1996.
  • Voter turnout, as a percentage of eligible voters, was slightly higher than 2004, and the best it has been in my lifetime, since 1976.

Sorry the chart is kind of small. Click on it to see a larger version.
What Does This Mean?
It means McCain lost the race as much as Obama won it. It means McCain did a lousy job of getting out the vote. McCain clearly didn’t excite the conservative base of the Republican party. You could have seen this coming by the fact that most conservative talk radio hosts (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, etc.) fought hard against McCain during the nomination process. Of course they supported McCain over Obama, as McCain was the lesser of two evils. But this never translated into the party rallying around its candidate. There was some excitement from the conservative base at the nomination of Sarah Palin as vice president, but this was short lived and didn’t give McCain enough momentum to overcome the left’s excitement around Barack Obama.

Four years from now, if the Republicans want to regain the White House, they better put forth a better candidate…a more conservative, younger (I wish age wasn’t a factor but I think it was) candidate who can excite the party base and the nation as a whole.

Media Bias in Presidential Election

The extreme media bias in favor of Barack Obama was no surprise to me or the 70 percent of voters that also said it was obvious that the press wanted Mr. Obama to win the White House. What is a little surprising is that The Washington Post’s ombudsman, Deborah Howell, came out and admitted it and even offered evidence of an “Obama tilt” in her own newspaper. Washington Post Op Eds (Opinion Editorials) heavily favored Obama by a 71% to 29% margin. Obama-related articles dominated the newspaper in a 55% to 45% margin over McCain, and that doesn’t even account for whether or not those article were favorable or not to the candidates.

On that subject, whether or not the ‘objective’ news articles were positive or negative to the candidates, I turn to Glenn Beck. You can watch/listen to his series on Youtube; just search for Glenn Beck Battle of the News Headlines. What Glenn found, and again this is no surprise to most of us, was that most of the news articles were positive for Obama and negative for McCain.

The news coverage during this election cycle was so heavily slanted in favor of Obama that even the left-leaning Saturday Night Live had to make fun of it, as seen in the video clip below.

Obama’s Campaign Promises

Per guidance from my wife, I’m going to try really hard not to be sarcastic here. But I really do want to commit to the public record the promises Barack Obama made during his historic run to the White House. I do this for several reasons: 1) so that I can know what to expect for myself and my country with the election of Obama, and 2) so that I can have something to refer back to four years from now when Obama runs for re-election.

I scoured Barack Obama’s Web site this morning. I thought I should hurry and do this before he takes down his Web site and tries to erase from our memory all the promises he has made. What I found I divided into two categories: 1) promises to individuals and families, and 2) promises to and for the nation overall. Directly below, I summarize his promises in some quick bullet points; further below is more detailed quotes pulled directly from Barack Obama’s Web site this morning.

Promises to Individuals and Families:

  • $1,000 per working family from a new “Making Work Pay” tax credit
  • $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families
  • Simplify tax filings so Americans will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes
  • A $500 Universal Mortgage Credit
  • Expand the Family and Medical Leave Act to allow parents up to 24 hours to participate in their children’s academic activities
  • Guaranteed health coverage for every American
  • Lower the cost of health care for the average American family by $2,500
  • Raise the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour
  • Completely eliminate taxes for seniors making under $50,000 per year
  • Provide home visits by trained registered nurses to low-income expectant mothers
  • Guaranteed seven paid sick days per year for low-wage workers
  • A new American Opportunity Tax Credit worth $4,000 in exchange for community service, making community college tuition completely free for most students
  • Protect Social Security, provide cheaper prescription drugs, and strengthen Medicare
  • Reduce homelessness among veterans

Promises to the Nation Overall:

  • Save more than 1 million jobs through a $25 billion State Growth Fund
  • Create 5 million new “Green” jobs
  • Create a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank that will create two million new jobs and stimulate $35 billion per year in new economic activity
  • Cut both taxes and government spending
  • Lower the federal deficit by reducing wasteful spending
  • Increase the supply of affordable housing
  • Reduce crime recidivism (i.e. repeat offenders)
  • Establish 20 Promise Neighborhoods which will provide early childhood education, violence prevention and after-school activities to entire neighborhoods from birth to college
  • Put 1 million plug-in hybrid cars on the road that can get 150 miles per gallon
  • Defeat terrorism worldwide
  • Secure our borders
  • Increase stability in Iraq and the Middle East
  • Support small business development
  • Put broadband Internet in every community in America

Now even Barack’s supporters must admit, this is a pretty tall order. But hey, I’m looking forward to it. I mean, we’re talking at least an additional $5,000 a year for me and my family due to his various tax credits and rebates. Government spending is going to be reduced. Terrorism will be defeated worldwide. Our borders will be secured. This is a conservative’s dream.

Okay, you can see that sacarism is starting to seep in. I just couldn’t resist. Below is the detail on each of our President Elect’s promises. It’s pretty lengthy, but again, I’m just putting it here for the record.

Barack Obama will provide a tax cut for working families: Obama and Biden will restore fairness to the tax code and provide 95 percent of working Americans the tax relief they need. They will create a new “Making Work Pay” tax credit of up to $500 per person, or $1,000 per working family.

Provide tax relief for small businesses and startups: Obama and Biden will eliminate all capital gains taxes on startup and small businesses to encourage innovation and job creation.

Fight for fair trade: Obama and Biden will fight for a trade policy that opens up foreign markets to support good American jobs. They will use trade agreements to spread good labor and environmental standards around the world.

Jumpstart the Economy: Enact a Windfall Profits Tax to Provide a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will enact a windfall profits tax on excessive oil company profits to give American families an immediate $1,000 emergency energy rebate to help families pay rising bills. This relief would be a down payment on the Obama-Biden long-term plan to provide middle-class families with at least $1,000 per year in permanent tax relief.

Provide $50 billion to Jumpstart the Economy and Prevent 1 Million Americans from Losing Their Jobs: This relief would include a $25 billion State Growth Fund to prevent state and local cuts in health, education, housing, and heating assistance or counterproductive increases in property taxes, tolls or fees. The Obama-Biden relief plan will also include $25 billion in a Jobs and Growth Fund to prevent cutbacks in road and bridge maintenance and fund school repair – all to save more than 1 million jobs in danger of being cut.

Simplify Tax Filings for Middle Class Americans: Obama and Biden will dramatically simplify tax filings so that millions of Americans will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes. Obama and Biden will ensure that the IRS uses the information it already gets from banks and employers to give taxpayers the option of pre-filled tax forms to verify, sign and return. Experts estimate that the Obama-Biden proposal will save Americans up to 200 million total hours of work and aggravation and up to $2 billion in tax preparer fees.

Invest In A Clean Energy Economy And Create 5 Million New Green Jobs: Obama and Biden will invest $150 billion over 10 years to advance the next generation of biofuels and fuel infrastructure, accelerate the commercialization of plug-in hybrids, promote development of commercial scale renewable energy, invest in low emissions coal plants, and begin transition to a new digital electricity grid. The plan will also invest in America’s highly-skilled manufacturing workforce and manufacturing centers to ensure that American workers have the skills and tools they need to pioneer the first wave of green technologies that will be in high demand throughout the world.

Create a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank: Barack Obama and Joe Biden will address the infrastructure challenge by creating a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank to expand and enhance, not supplant, existing federal transportation investments. This independent entity will be directed to invest in our nation’s most challenging transportation infrastructure needs. The Bank will receive an infusion of federal money, $60 billion over 10 years, to provide financing to transportation infrastructure projects across the nation. These projects will create up to two million new direct and indirect jobs and stimulate approximately $35 billion per year in new economic activity.

Create a Universal Mortgage Credit: Obama and Biden will create a 10 percent universal mortgage credit to provide homeowners who do not itemize tax relief. This credit will provide an average of $500 to 10 million homeowners, the majority of whom earn less than $50,000 per year.

Expand the Family and Medical Leave Act: The FMLA covers only certain employees of employers with 50 or more employees. Obama and Biden will expand it to cover businesses with 25 or more employees. They will expand the FMLA to cover more purposes as well, including allowing workers to take leave for elder care needs; allowing parents up to 24 hours of leave each year to participate in their children’s academic activities; and expanding FMLA to cover leave for employees to address domestic violence.

Obama Attacks McCain Economic Plan as Selfish, But Who’s Really the Self One?

In a speech yesterday in Florida, Barack Obama defend himself against attacks from John McCain in which Obama is labeled a socialist. In fact, Barack attempts to turn the tables on McCain’s ecomonic plan by calling it “selfish.” Obama says, “I don’t know when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness.” (from TampaBay.com)

Calling conservative economic principles, as far as John McCain is conservative, selfish is an insult and could not be further from the truth.

Which approach is more selfish?

  • John McCain wants to extend the Bush tax cuts and let the American people keep more of their hard-earned money.
  • Barack Obama was to end the Bush tax cuts, and raise taxes on top of that, taking away more of people’s hard-earned money.

Which approach is more selfish?

  • John McCain wants to balance the federal budget, reduce our national debt and require the government to spend only what it takes in.
  • Barack Obama proposes billions in new spending that will cause deficits and drive up our national debt, passing a tremendous burden on to future generations.

That fact is that Barack Obama is a socialist. He wants to raise taxes and spread the wealth with an all-powerful federal government. But while some democrats would trust Obama to take care of all American’s wants and needs, Obama is too selfish to even take care of his own family.

Obama’s selfishness can also be seen in his charitable giving:

Like most liberals and socialists, Obama is only generous with other peoples money. With Barack Obama, it’s do as I say, not as I do. Now you tell me, who’s the selfish one?

Obama: Most Liberal Senator

Every year a computer-assisted analysis is done by the National Journal that uses key Senate votes and places every senator on a liberal-to-conservative scale. Earlier this year, the 2007 ranking were released and Senator Barack Obama was rated by as the number one most liberal senator. Obama was given this ranking for good reason, here is a summary of his key voting record for the year:

  • A bill to give states the authority to set their own minimum wages…Obama voted NO.
  • A bill to require higher-income seniors to pay higher premiums for Medicare…Obama voted NO.
  • Repeal the estate tax (aka repeal the Death tax)…Obama voted NO.
  • Speed up the permitting process for oil-refining…Obama voted NO.
  • Support adult-stem-cell and other non-embryonic-stem-cell research…Obama voted NO.
  • Permit law enforcement officers to question individuals about their immigrant status…Obama voted NO.
  • Require the disclosure of information on visa applicants to law enforcement officers…Obama voted NO.
  • Make English the official language of the United States…Obama voted NO.
  • Define a fetus as an “unborn child”…Obama voted NO.
  • Raise the tax rate on income over $1 million…Obama voted YES.
  • Raise the cigarette tax by 61 cents a pack…Obama voted YES.
  • Require a study of global-warming effects…Obama voted YES.
  • Increase taxes to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program…Obama voted YES.
  • Make temporary guest workers eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit…Obama voted YES.
  • Require U.S. troops to begin withdrawing from Iraq by July 2007…Obama voted YES.
  • Set a timeline for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq…Obama voted YES.
  • Increase financial aid for college students…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Block abuse from non-pregnant adults for coverage under SCHIP…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Limit governments’ eminent domain power over private land…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Permit funding for international organizations that perform abortions…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Prohibit family-planning funds to organizations that perform abortions…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Restrict the U.S. share of the cost of United Nations peacekeeping operations…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Block funding for World Bank…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Condemn personal attacks on Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. commander in Iraq…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Implement a free-trade agreement with Peru…Obama DID NOT vote.
  • Add $70 billion to a fiscal 2008 omnibus spending package to pay for the Iraq war …Obama DID NOT vote.
  • NationalJournal.com, Key Votes Used To Calculate The Ratings

Obama consistently voted for higher taxes and more government encroachment into our lives. He voted to give benefits to illegal aliens and to make it more difficult to enforce immigration laws. And unborn child is apparently not an unborn child to Obama. His national defense record is abysmal, voting to give money to the UN and World Bank while cutting off funds to our own troops. And its astonishing the amount of key legistlation on which he did not even vote. He can’t even make up his mind, yes or no, on college financial aid or on funding abortion groups. Someone too weak to take a stand on key issues is sure to weaken our country. Obama’s voting record clearly shows us the direction he will take this country and it is not a good one.

    Birds of a Feather

When I was a boy, I was taught to be careful who I made friends with. You can influence your friends and your friends can have a large influence on you. “Birds of a feather flock together” was a common refrain explaining how people of like mind, character and action tend to become friends and work together. With that in mind, take a look at some of the friends of Democrat Party presidential nominee Barack Obama; they include terrorists, convicted criminals, anti-American radicals, and communists. These are not people that are just infrequent acquaintances of Obama, these are people he has worked closely with, some for as many as 20 years:

  • Domestic Terrorist Bill Ayers
  • Convicted Real Estate Tycoon and Fundraiser Tony Rezko
  • Anti-American, Black Liberation Pastor Jeremiah Wright
  • Deposed Fannie Mae Executive Franklin Raines
  • Frank Marshall Davis of the Communist Party USA
  • Resigned and Imprisoned Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick

    Domestic Terrorist Bill Ayers:
In 1970, Bill Ayers, along with his wife Bernadine Dohrn, were indicted for inciting a riot and conspiracy to bomb government buildings. Dohrn was convicted; Ayers was not. However, Ayers remains unrepentant, telling The New York Times in 2001, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” In early 1995, Bill Ayers created a foundation called the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, and Barack Obama became the chairman of the board of that foundation. Later that year, in Obama’s first political campaign, Barack held a campaign kickoff and fund-raiser at the home of Bill Ayers. –FOXNews Examines Barack’s Relationship With Bill Ayers
Know Enough? John McCain ad about Obama’s Relationship with terrorist Bill Ayers
Obama-Ayers records blocked at U of I Chicago

Convicted Real Estate Tycoon and Fundraiser Tony Rezko:
Antoin “Tony” Rezko is an American political fundraiser, restaurateur, and real estate developer in Chicago, Illinois. He was convicted of 16 federal charges in 2006 for using connections to the state boards to demand kickbacks from businesses that wanted to do business with the state. In 2008, Rezko was convicted on several more counts of fraud and bribery. In 2003, Rezko was on Obama’s U.S. Senate campaign finance committee, which raised more than $14 million. Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama, which was instrumental in providing Obama with seed money for his U.S. Senate race. Obama has since identified over $250,000 in campaign contributions coming from Rezko. In 2005 Obama purchased a new home in Chicago for $1.65 million, which was $300,000 below the asking price but, claims Obama, represented the highest offer on the property. On the same day, Rezko’s wife, Rita Rezko, purchased the adjoining empty lot from the same sellers for the full asking price. In 2006, Obama purchased a 10 foot wide strip of Ms. Rezko’s property for $104,500, more than twice the assessed value. Obama later acknowledged that the exchange may have created the appearance of impropriety, and said “I consider this a mistake on my part and I regret it.”
    Tony Rezko article on Wikipedia

Anti-American, Black Liberation Pastor Jeremiah Wright:
I have previously detailed the relationship between Obama and Pastor Jeremiah Wright in my post entitled Barack Obama is Dangerous. But to recap, Obama was a member of his congregation for about 20 years. Wright married Obama and his wife and baptized their children. Wright, a pastor for Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, has made numerous outrageous and anti-American sermons and is known for following Black Liberation Theology.

Deposed Fannie Mae Executive Franklin Raines:
The connection between Barack Obama, Franklin Raines, and ACORN, the radical community activist group that has repeatedly been caught at voter fraud, including registering nonexistent people to vote.-Connect the Dots With Barack Obama, FOXNews.com
Franklin Raines made $90 million while he was head of Fannie Mae. After mismanaging that institution into financial crisis, he was deposed as head of Fannie Mae. Liberal Democrats have defended Raines and refused to hold him accountable. Franklin Raines is now a consultant to the Obama campaign on housing of all things! –Do Facts Matter? By Thomas Sowell, National Review Online

Frank Marshall Davis, Communist Party USA:
Barack Obama has an admitted relationship with Frank Marshall Davis, a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where, at some point in time, he developed a close relationship with Davis, listening to his “poetry” and getting advice on his career path. Obama talks about this relationship with his friend “Frank” in more detail in his book, Dreams From My Father. –Obama’s Communist Mentor
Why Obama’s Communist Mentor is News
AP Lies About Obama’s Communist Mentor

Resigned and Imprisoned Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick:
Kilpatrick pleaded guilty in September to two felony charges, resigned, and accepted a 120-day jail sentence. On the stage together in May 2007, Kilpatrick introduced by Obama as a “great mayor.” Said Obama about Kilpatrick, “He is a leader not just here in Detroit, not just in Michigan, but all across the country,” an exuberant Obama said of Kilpatrick. “We know that he is going to be doing astounding things for many years to come. I am grateful to call him a friend and colleague, and I am looking forward to a lengthy collaboration.” –After Kilpatrick, GOP will seek to link Obama to Michigan’s poor governance.

  • Conclusion
Based on who Barack Obama chooses to associate with, learn from and go to for advice, I have serious concerns about his judgment and the direction he will take this country. Obama is clearly a far left leaning liberal who flirts with socialism that will destroy the freedoms we hold dear. If you are “hoping” for “change” with Barack Obama, you may get it and you will get it in the form of more dirty politics and more scandals than even the Clinton administration. You will get a country that will be changed into a socialist republic in the way Barack Obama and his buddies want to make it. And in the process, our freedoms will be eroded, taxes will be raised, our security will be compromised, and the prosperity this nation has always enjoyed will be in jeopardy.

The Race for President: Bob Barr Analyzed

A few months ago, the Libertarian Party nominated Bob Barr as their candidate for president. So here is my analysis:

About the candidate: Bob Barr started his career with the CIA in 1971. He left the CIA in 1978 and began practicing law and eventually became a federal prosecutor. Barr was a member of the US House of Representatives where he represented Georgia’s 7th district as a Republican from 1995 to 2003. Barr attained national prominence as one of the leaders of the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. In 2006, he joined the Libertarian Party.

    Issue/Voting Criteria Candidate’s Stance Candidate’s Record Grade
    1. Strengthening the Family “School reform starts by shifting control over education from government to parents. We must abolish the Department of Education, eliminate federal grants and regulations, and begin moving power back to the states and local communities. States should consider tax credits or deductions for parents who home school or send their children to private schools. Public schools should be managed locally, increasing accountability and parental involvement.” BobBarr2008.com -“He authored and sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act, a law enacted in 1996 which states that only marriages that are between a man and a woman can be federally recognized, and individual states may choose not to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state. At the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, he apologized for the part of the Defense of Marriage Act. He opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment, contending it is a violation of states’ rights.” From Wikipedia
-“In Congress, Barr’s strong stance against medical marijuana put him at odds with marijuana policy reformers such as the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP). Despite this historic antagonism, in March 2007, Barr reversed his stance on medical marijuana and began lobbying on behalf of MPP.” From Wikipedia
Barr “voted YES on banning partial-birth abortions. (Apr 2000). He voted YES on barring transporting minors to get an abortion. (Jun 1999).
He voted YES on banning gay adoptions in DC. (Jul 1999)
Voted YES on allowing vouchers in DC schools. (Aug 1998)
Voted YES on vouchers for private & parochial schools. (Nov 1997)
Supports requiring schools to allow prayer. (Jan 2001)” From OnTheIssues.org

    B
1A. Pro-Life/Anti-Abortion “The Constitution does not empower the federal government to regulate this issue, whether to ban or legalize abortion… Court decisions, beginning with Roe v. Wade, that restrict the right of states to decide the issue of abortion should be overturned.” BobBarr2008.com
    A
    1B. Pro-Traditional Marriage
“Regardless of whether one supports or opposes same sex marriage, the decision to recognize such unions ought to be made by each state rather than imposed as a one-size-fits-all mandate by the federal government. Any federal laws that prevent states from determining their own standards for marriage should be repealed; the federal government should not define marriage, whether by statute or constitutional amendment.” BobBarr2008.com C
    2. Defending Our Country “It is time to reemphasize the word “defense” in national defense. By maintaining a military presence in more than 130 nations around the world in more than 700 installations, with hundreds of thousands of troops deployed overseas, the U.S. spends more to protect the soil of other nations than our own.” BobBarr2008.com “In 2002 Barr voted for the Iraq Resolution. He has since called for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, leaving no permanent military bases. 2A. Defeating Terrorists “The invasion and occupation of Iraq were two separate mistakes, which collectively have cost thousands of American lives and hundreds of billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars. Every day that the occupation in Iraq continues without a withdrawal plan is a day that more American blood and treasure (some $400 million a day) is needlessly wasted.” BobBarr2008.com C
2B. Protecting Our Borders “The government must balance security and sovereignty concerns, which necessitate controlling the border, with the economic benefits of immigration. 3. Free Market Economic Policy -“The free market, driven by consumer choice and reflecting the real cost of resources, should be the foundation of America’s energy policy. The federal government should eliminate restrictions that inhibit energy production, as well as all special privileges for the production of politically-favored fuels, such as ethanol.”
-“Federal health care programs, most notably Medicare and Medicaid, have become financially unsustainable. 3A. Lower Taxes -“Government should eliminate regulatory barriers that inhibit private philanthropy, and expand tax deductions to encourage charitable giving.”
-“Tax reform is desperately needed in the United States; but before we can reform the tax code, we must sharply reduce the tax burden on Americans made necessary. Second, we need a tax code that makes taxation fairer and simpler for all citizens. Meaningful tax reform begins with reining in government spending. “

On social issues, Barr gets mixed review. He seems to want to strengthen families, and when he was a congressman did a lot of good, but in recent years has repented of the good things he has done, all in the name of states rights. On national security issues, Barr again gets a mixed review. He voted for the Iraq War, but now calls it a mistake. Barr is pretty good on Second Amendment issues and has a record of being tough on crime. In word and deed, Barr is for the free-market and smaller government and has consistently voted to lower taxes.

All in all, Barr scores a very respectable 3.33 on my grade point scale. In fact, that puts him and the Libertarian party in the lead based on my system. My former leader, the Constitution Party’s nominee, Chuck Baldwin, got a grade point average of 3.22. The Republican’s nominee, John McCain got a score of 2.56. And of course the Democratic Party’s nominee, Barack Obama, scored a dismal 0.56.

    Barack Obama Is Dangerous

Not to re-hash old news (a very busy last few months has prevented me from staying current on my blog), but the more I learn about Barack Obama, the more dangerous I realize he is.

I heard this quote from Barack Obama only today. It’s a quote from his book, “Dreams from my Father”, where Obama quotes part of a Reverend Jeremiah Wright speech where he says that “white folk’s greed runs a world in need.” (Listen to the audio on YouTube). In this YouTube clip, Obama explains that the title of his book, the Audacity of Hope, was also inspired by the Rev. Wright. This is the same Rev. Wright who said the following:

  • A sermon in April 2003, Wright said: “The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes three-strike laws and wants them to sing God Bless America. No! No No! God damn America … for killing innocent people. God damn America for threatening citizens as less than humans. God damn America as long as she tries to act like she is God and supreme.”
  • In another speech, made in the days after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Wright said, “We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki. And we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye…We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because of stuff we have done overseas is now brought back into our own backyard. America’s chickens coming home to roost.”
  • The pastor has also said: “The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color.”

Outrageous stuff, and this was Barack Obama’s spiritual advisor for 20 years. He married Barack Obama and he baptized their kids, but now, conveniently, Obama has denounced the Reverend and separated himself from Wright. But that doesn’t change the fact that this pastor was a major influence on Obama and likely indicative of Barack’s own way of thinking.

On other, more recent news, Barack is again showing how dangerous he would be in the area of foreign policy. Early this week, on July 9, 2008, Fox News reported, “Iran launches nine long- and medium-range missiles, including one that could reach Israel, U.S. bases.” And right on queue, Obama was quoted the same day saying, “Iran is a grave threat. It has an illicit nuclear program. It supports terrorism across the region and militias in Iraq. It threatens Israel’s existence.” Fine and dandy, but this was not what Obama was saying just two months earlier. True to his campaign theme of “change”, he had a completely different stance in May 18, 2008 when Barack Obama said, “I mean think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union. They don’t pose a serious threat to us.”

So which is it Barack Obama, does Iran “not pose a serious threat” or is Iran “a grave threat”? I guess it all depends on which way the wind blows. This man would be a disaster as our president; he is dangerous, and I haven’t even touched on the danger posed by his liberal, big-government agenda. (We’ll save that for another day.)

  • The Race for President: Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party Analyzed

The Democrat Party long ago abandoned the fundamental principles of the Constitution (limited government, private property rights, and personal freedom) and in recent years the Republican Party too has supported unconstitutional growth of government and encroachments on our freedom. More and more, I have felt the need for our country to return to God-inspired Constitutional principles. So in this Presidential election year, I thought I would look into the Constitution Party and analyze their candidate for President of the United States.

About the Candidate: Charles “Chuck” Baldwin is a pastor of Crossroad Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida. In 2004, Baldwin was the Constitution Party nominee for Vice President, and on April 26, Baldwin was named as their 2008 presidential nominee. Baldwin hosts a weekly radio program and writes a weekly news column carried on his website and on the VDARE.com site as well.

    Issue/Voting Criteria Candidate’s Stance Candidate’s Record Grade
    1. Strengthening the Family Baldwin Campaign Kickoff:
Chuck Baldwin is the most visible and vocal upholder of the party’s seven primary principles: Life (starting at conception), Liberty, Family (one husband, one wife, together with as many children as God gives them), Property, Constitution, States’ Rights and American Sovereignty. Dr. Baldwin has pledged to uphold the Constitution Party’s platform, “without hesitation, and without reservation.”

    A
    1A. Pro-Life/Anti-Abortion From Baldwin’s Website:
I will use the bully pulpit of the Presidency to demand that Congress enact Dr. Ron Paul’s Sanctity of Life Act which would set forth that every unborn child is a ‘person’ under the Constitution, entitled to equal protection of the law and therefore, no unborn child could be killed without due process of law.
    A
    1B. Pro-Traditional Marriage
    Constitution Party Platform:
The law of our Creator defines marriage as the union between one man and one woman. The marriage covenant is the foundation of the family, and the family is fundamental in the maintenance of a stable, healthy and prosperous social order. No government may legitimately authorize or define marriage or family relations contrary to what God has instituted.
    A
    2. Defending Our Country From Baldwin’s web site:
“It is a primary obligation of the federal government to provide for the common defense of the United States of America, and to be vigilant regarding potential threats, prospective capabilities, and perceived intentions of potential enemies…We will have a national defense that is second to none, with armed forces that serve only
under our flag, whose mission is to defend these United States of America!”
    A
2A. Defeating Terrorists From Baldwin’s web site:
“I would begin the process of safely extracting our troops from Iraq. In the first place, our troops are no longer fighting a war, they are an occupation force, which occupies a sovereign country. And this is being done without a Declaration of War. The Iraqi people resent our occupation as much as we would resent another nation stronger than ours invading and occupying America. If such a thing happened to our beloved country, I’m sure many of us would also become ‘insurgents’.”

In the wake of 9/11 and the so-called ‘War on Terror’ we have seen legislation and executive action that deprives the American people of their rights secured under the Fourth and Fifth Amendments under the guise of “combating terrorism” or ‘protecting national security.’

    F.
Baldwin doesn’t seem to believe there is a war on terrorism. The US is not an occupying force in Iraq. We are there by invitation and if the Iraqi government wanted us out, we would leave. Our presence there is not resented by the Iraqi people, and our soldiers can verify that they are greatly appreciated by the vast majority of Iraqis. And to say that we too would be insurgents makes my blood boil. By saying that, he is equating terrorist actions with a legitimate uprising in defense of rights such as the American Revolution.
2B. Protecting Our Borders From Baldwin’s web site:
“Illegal immigration stops the day we take the White House!..We will seal our borders and ports. I support construction of a fence to secure our borders, but a Baldwin Administration will not wait for the construction of a fence in order to seal and secure our borders. We will utilize whatever force is necessary, including regular military personnel, to effectively secure our borders immediately.”
    A
    3. Free Market Economic Policy From Baldwin’s web site:
A Baldwin economic policy will provide opportunities and freedom for millions of average Americans, not obscene profits for international bankers and multinational corporations.

So-called “free trade” deals such as NAFTA, CAFTA, and the FTAA, which have all but destroyed America’s manufacturing base and have put millions of American workers out of their jobs!

    D.
Baldwin is not a strong supporter of free market economics, as in his opposition to free trade. Also, profits are not obscene. If people are breaking the law to make money, then send them to jail. Otherwise, people are (or should be) free to make as much money as they can.
3A. Lower Taxes From Baldwin’s web site:
I will work feverishly to overturn the Sixteenth Amendment, which would repeal the Income Tax.

I would also work to repeal the “death tax,” inheritance taxes, and property taxes. The American people are already paying somewhere between 30% and 40% of their income to Uncle Sam. It must stop. We are bankrupting our country with this incessant and burdensome tax system.

    A
3B. Smaller Government From Baldwin’s web site:
Great are the dangers of giving unlimited, unconstitutional power to a government that does not respect the checks and balances intended by our Constitution and Bill of Rights!

I will champion the property rights of individuals and families
and I will oppose eminent domain abuse whenever and wherever I find it in this country!

    A

I don’t believe Baldwin has ever held a political position, which is why his “Record” column is blank. Therefore, just going off his stance on the issues, I give Chuck Baldwin a grade point average of 3.22. This is better than John McCain’s score of 2.56, but far better than Barack Obama’s dismal 0.56 score. (Mitt Romney still has the top score in my candidate rating system.)

I’m not thrilled about some of Baldwin’s statements on defeating terrorism in the world, nor do I like some of his economic views, but overall, he is a very viable candidate. He got a grade A on seven of my nine categories, so right now, I have to say I am leaning toward Chuck Baldwin and the Constitution Party.

The Race for President: Ron Paul Analyzed

A couple of people have asked what I thought of Ron Paul. My initial exposure to Ron Paul, was in the early Republican debates, and honestly, he came across as a bit of a kook. Despite that initial bad impression, my opinion of him has now changed.

About the candidate: Ron Paul is a Republican United States Congressman from Lake Jackson, Texas, a physician, a bestselling author, and a former 2008 Republican presidential candidate. Paul considered becoming a Lutheran minister like two of his brothers, instead he decided to pursue a medical degree at Duke University. The medical training was soon interrupted when he received a draft notice and entered the U.S. Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He remained in the military during the early years of the Vietnam War. He served active duty as a flight surgeon from 1963 to 1965.

    Issue/Voting Criteria Candidate’s Stance Candidate’s Record Grade
    1. Strengthening the Family From Ron Paul’s Website:
-As President I will advance tax credits through the Family Education Freedom Act, which reduces taxes to make it easier for parents to home school by allowing them to devote more of their own funds to their children’s education.
    From Wikipedia:
-Paul opposes federal regulation of marriage.
-His pro-life legislation, like the Sanctity of Life Act, is intended to negate Roe v. Wade.
-Paul has introduced several bills to apply tax credits toward education, including credits for parental spending on public, private, or homeschool students (Family Education Freedom Act).
-He has also introduced the Sanctity of Life Act

    From Ron Paul’s Website:
-“My wife Carol and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary early this year. We are proud parents of five children and 18 grandchildren. We love them very much.”

    C
    1A. Pro-Life/Anti-Abortion From Ron Paul’s Website:
-The right of an innocent, unborn child to life is at the heart of the American ideals of liberty. My professional and legislative record demonstrates my strong commitment to this pro-life principle.
-Once we allow federal control over abortion, we lose the opportunity for states to enact pro-life legislation. Numerous states already have laws that punish the act of murder against a fetus. Our focus should be on overturning Roe.
    A
    1B. Pro-Traditional Marriage
Can’t find anything on Paul’s website regarding this issue.
    D
    2. Defending Our Country From Ron Paul’s Website:
-When I voted for the authorization to use force against those who attacked us in 2001, I did not imagine that we would be getting bogged down for years in a nation-building exercise in Afghanistan
-A foreign policy of non-interventionism overseas will be the first step in reducing threats to the U.S. …An America-first defense policy will not go abroad seeking monsters to slay.
    From Ron Paul’s Website:
-Paul introduced H.R. 3217 would prohibit the issuance of student, training, vocational, and diversity visas without presidential review to anyone from a country that repeatedly supports terrorism or does not cooperate fully with U.S. antiterrorism efforts.

    From Wikipedia:
-Paul voted for the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists in response to the September 11, 2001
-But he “voted against the Iraq War Resolution in 2002”
-Paul sponsored a resolution to repeal the war authorization in February 2003.
-Paul voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

    C
2A. Defeating Terrorists From Ron Paul’s Website:
-“The United States invaded Iraq under false pretenses without a constitutionally-required declaration of war.”
-Re-focus the efforts of our military and intelligence services on locating those individuals who planned the terrorist attacks on the U.S. and who remain at large.
-Ron Paul wants to “earnestly attempt to understand what it is that motivates others to wish us harm and then to act upon those wishes.”
    D
2B. Protecting Our Borders From Ron Paul’s Website:
-The talk must stop. We must secure our borders now. A nation without secure borders is no nation at all. It makes no sense to fight terrorists abroad when our own front door is left unlocked.
-A defense policy designed to keep Americans safe should start with the idea that we must secure our borders from those who would cross them to do us harm.
    A
    3. Free Market Economic Policy From Ron Paul’s Website:
-“The true crisis facing us is not a physical shortage of energy, but rather the looming threat that socialist economic planning will replace market mechanisms and cause unnecessary shortages.”
-“We must understand that high oil prices are not the result of an unregulated free market. On the contrary, the oil industry is among the most regulated and most subsidized of U.S. industries. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves whether too much government involvement in the oil markets, rather than too little regulation, has kept the supply of refined gasoline artificially low.”
    From Wikipedia:
-“Ron Paul has rejected a Congressional pension because the program is taxpayer-subsidized.”
-“Paul was the first member of Congress to propose term limits legislation in the House”
-Paul insists he will “never vote for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution.”
-Paul would abolish the individual income tax by scaling back the federal budget to its 2000 spending levels.
-He has written successful legislation to prevent several eminent domain seizures.
-Paul publishes a monthly newsletter, Ron Paul’s Freedom Report, which seeks to create a greater public awareness of the principles of limited government.

    B
3A. Lower Taxes From Ron Paul’s Website:
-“I certainly support President Bush’s tax cut initiatives, and I will vote (or have voted) for each plank in his tax cut plan. Lowering marginal rates, eliminating the marriage penalty, abolishing the death tax.”
-” Working Americans like lower taxes. So do I. Lower taxes benefit all of us, creating jobs and allowing us to make more decisions for ourselves about our lives… Lower taxes allow more spending, saving, and investing which helps the economy — that means all of us. ”
    A
3B. Smaller Government From Ron Paul’s Website:
-“Today our national debt stands at $8.2 trillion, which represents about $26,000 for every man, woman, and child in America. It’s time for American taxpayers to understand that every dollar will have to be repaid. We should have the courage to face our grandchildren knowing that we have done all we can to end the government spending spree.”
-“Massive spending funds an unbelievable number of federal departments, agencies, programs, and personnel. Most Americans understand that the federal government is far too large, yet most of their representatives in Congress continue to vote for spending increases every year. As a result, the same unconstitutional agencies grow, the same counterproductive programs are perpetuated.”
    A

Ron Paul scored much better than I initially expected. His 2.89 grade point average, puts him a little higher than John McCain in my ranking. Paul is strong on pro-life issues, but weak on other family and marriage issues. He is strong against illegal immigration and protecting the border, but weak on other defense issues. He is very good on economic, tax and limiting the power of government issues.

I’m not sure if Ron Paul is still running for president or not. Obviously, he did not get the Republican nomination, which he sought. If he ends up on the ballot, as an independent or third-party candidate, he may be my best option.
